Championship One League Cup final

Travellers Stanley vs Vulcan FC (0-1)

An early gifted goal cashed in by Ben Devine proved to be the winning goal as the league's newcomers and Huddersfield-based Vulcan FC overcame Travellers Stanley in the Championship One league cup final played at the Nostell NW complex on Sunday afternoon.

Travellers suffered a pre-match jolt when they were forced to replace first choice goalkeeper Xhenaldo Miza with Ashley Townend due to an eleventh-hour technicality. In the opening minutes, a surging run on the left-flank and a low cross by Harry Chamberlain across the Travellers danger zone saw a lack of decision making allow Ben Devine tap the ball home from close range to give Vulcan an early 1-0 lead.

At the other end, Harry Wilson of the Travellers missed a good opportunity to find target from close-range mis-hitting his volley following an excellent free kick in the 15th minute. Vulcan poised a threat on the counter-attack and saw Charlie Horncastle hir the Travellers side netting at the end of a fast raid.

Two minutes from half-time, Travellers Scott Carr sent in a tremendous effort goal bound forcing the Vulcan goalkeeper James Randal into an agile finger tip save to tip the ball over the goal at the expense of a corner.

The second half proved to be a dour affair albeit the Travellers were forcing the play as the Vulcan seemed to tire. However, the Travellers fightback lacked the clinical touch as the Vulcan held on to add their first trophy in their cabinet in their first ever season.
